The Reading Comprehension Questions in the After Reading 1 are an in-depth series of questions. They follow the Question/Answer Relationship sequence (QAR) which is explained in the Milestones California Teacher’s Edition notes and in the Instructional Routines section of the Staff Development Handbook.

“Right There” questions’ answers come from information found directly and explicitly in the reading. Students can point to the answer.

The second level of questions, “Think and Search”, requires students to cull the answers from information found in several places in the reading.

The next level of questions, “Author and Me”, requires that student put together information they already know with information provided by the author.

Ultimately lastly, in the “On My Own” (or “On Your Own”) questions, the reader does not use the text to answer the question.  Rather, the question can be answered using a reader’s background knowledge or his or her opinions and experiences
