Upon completion of the Preview the Unit pages, your students will be ready to begin Chapter 1.

The Chapter Objectives provide a road map to what is going to be accomplished in the Chapter. Suggestions for previewing and pre-assessing are provided in the wrap column.

These outcomes are based on the California English-Language Arts Standards. You will want to make these available for daily reference, by posting on the board.

Also addressed here is the boxed presentation of the Academic Vocabulary and Academic Content which will be learned in the Chapter.

The Chapter Focus Question is a question students should keep in mind as they read both reading selections in the chapter.
