Each Unit opens with a main photo accompanied by smaller ones that are all thematically based. These images serve as the introduction to the theme of the unit and support the Unit-opening activity called Explore the Theme.

The questions in Explore the Theme are designed to stimulate higher order thinking as well as vocabulary development and comprehension.

Through the image and the discussion, the schema, or background knowledge, is activated and comprehension skills strengthened.
