Here the students think about and answer the Reading Check questions with a partner.

Then they share their questions and answers with another pair of students. There are numerous techniques for utilizing the Reading Check questions: as a whole-class activity, as a written spot quiz, in small groups as a follow up to small group reading, to name a few.

To differentiate instruction, you might have some students create their own questions for the rest of the class to answer.

You can monitor students’ reading comprehension while they work through the selection, and model comprehension repair strategies, such as skimming for answers, re-reading, using the glossed words, re-visiting the Vocabulary From the Reading, and applying other useful reading strategies which they have learned.

For information and additional suggestions for student engagement and collaboration, review the Classroom Management and Culturally Responsive Teaching sections in the Staff Development Handbook in the Milestones Teacher’s Edition.
