The next preparatory activity in the Before Reading 1 section highlights the Milestones emphasis on vocabulary acquisition. Here it’s the Vocabulary From the Reading. The words from Vocabulary From the Reading are always highlighted (in yellow) in the Student Edition.

The treatment of vocabulary in Milestones implements Robert Marzano’s six-step process, including a description/example, restatement, and construction of a graphic representation by the student. You will find a description and reference in the “Vocabulary” section in the Staff Development Handbook.

Word Connections is a regular feature in the vocabulary sections of Milestones. These activities use graphic organizers and other techniques to teach word relationships and vocabulary development strategies important in building reading proficiency.
