Greece

You’ve all heard of National Geographic – the magazine, the channel, the explorers. Perhaps you’ve also heard that your colleagues are teaching English with materials from National Geographic.

National Geographic Learning, a part of Cengage, is a specialized publisher of materials for teachers and learners of English. To create relevant and contemporary materials for the English Language Teaching classroom, we partner with National Geographic, and with TED. And National Geographic Learning has strong roots in Greece, where you would once have known us as New Editions.

Over the past seven years, our partnerships with National Geographic and TED have helped us to build on that strong foundation and to become National Geographic Learning. We have retained the experience and successful publishing from New Editions, and those can still be seen in the innovative and award-winning materials you see in our catalogue.

Our goal is to the bring the world into your classroom, and to help you bring your classroom to life!

Sowing the Seeds of Success: 7 Practical Strategies to Create Motivated Young Learners
We want our students to succeed. But how can we set them up for success? In this session we’ll focus on 7 practical strategies to motivate our students and help them become passionate learners of English.

Happy World 1 & 2 and Great Wonders 1 - 4. The next generation of coursebooks from National Geographic Leaning
Happy World for Junior A’ and B’ and Great Wonders for Senior A - D’. National Geographic Learning brings the next generation of course books in Greece. A comprehensive grammar syllabus, combined with spectacular video, inspiring photography, fascinating facts that spark curiosity and online resources, bring the world to the classroom and the classroom to life!

Do androids dream of electric sheep? ELT & digital empathy
Planting the seeds of empathy in the ‘digital generation’ classroom can prove a useful tool when dealing with conflicting emotions in today’s changing ELT world. This workshop will introduce the concept of ‘techno-ethics’ and demonstrate how technology-aided teaching can be enhanced with the inclusion of empathy, the subtle tool that builds 21st century learning and global competency. Knowledge of the world and the way people feel is a great way to bring the world to the classroom and the classroom to life!

Welcome and Developing Global Citizens - 5 ways your YLs will change the world
The English language classroom has gone beyond being the place where we just teach English grammar, vocabulary and the four skills. The English classroom is now also the place where we need to teach our students about the world in which English is the lingua franca. Moreover, we need to help them develop the knowledge, values and skills to become both active and effective global citizens. After all, the future is in their hands. With this in mind, in this presentation we’ll look at five ways in which our young learners will change the world.

Being a National Geographic Explorer
Danai Papageorgiou is a behavioural ecologist and a National Geographic Explorer, based at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Germany. Danai investigates the coordination of collective action, i.e. how animal groups make decisions about where to go and what to do each day. Her current focus of investigation is the vulturine guineafowl in the Kenyan savannah, a dream field site for many wildlife biologists. In her presentation, Danai will talk about the skills it has taken her to get where she is today, the different experiences she has undertaken and her findings and how English has played a part in this.

Presenters

Eftychis Kantarakis

Eftychis Kantarakis is an ELT teacher and teacher trainer working for National Geographic Learning. He has trained teachers in many countries in the Middle East and has regularly presented at International Conference in Europe. He is a former TESOL Greece vice-chair and Newsletter Editor.

Alex Warren

Alex is the Teacher Trainer here at NGL. He studied history at university and worked as a journalist for several years. After travelling the world he returned to the UK to complete his CELTA qualification in Bournemouth. For the last six years Alex has been working as an Academic Director and teacher trainer at a successful private language school. The move into teacher training on a permanent basis was only a matter of time and Alex is now enjoying developing teachers on an international scale.

Julia Alivertis

Julia Alivertis has been a teacher of English for more than 25 years and a part-time teacher trainer for state school teachers, while raising 3 children. A firm believer in life-long learning and CPD, Julia is currently pursuing an M.A. in TESOL and is an active member of TESOL Greece. She has co-organised the three TG International events in Preveza, Greece, where she lives and has taken part as a speaker in many International ELT Conferences.

Danai Papageorgiou

Danai earned her undergraduate Biology degree and her MSc from the University of Patras. In the meanwhile, she assisted as an intern in Germany, Denmark and Greece on several different projects. During her PhD, she focuses on her main interest, which is social structure and collective behaviour in animals. In particular she studies leadership and collective decision-making in wild vulturine guineafowls, which form remarkably cohesive groups. Interflock interactions, dominance and collective movement attract Danai’s attention. She is also fascinated by field work and non-invasive experiments combined with the application of novel technology to track and analyse animal behaviour.
