Linux+ and LPIC-1 Guide to Linux Certification

To ensure that learners can use the latest Fedora™ and Ubuntu® Linux® distributions for hands-on projects, any exercise modifications needed for future versions of Fedora™ and Ubuntu® Linux® will be made available on a GitHub repository.

The sixth edition corresponds seamlessly to both CompTIA's Linux® and Linux Professional Institute's LPIC-1 certification exams. The sixth edition's up-to-date content and coverage of new technologies prepares learners for success on the latest Linux+ (XK0-005) certification exam, as well as the latest LPIC-1 certification exams (101-500 and 102-500).

Chapter 1 (Introduction to Linux®) has been revamped to reflect current technologies and their uses, as well as virtualization and containers. A new Linux in the Cloud section has been added to introduce core cloud terminology, as well as discuss the role Linux plays within cloud environments and continuous deployment (CD) workflows.

Chapter 6 (Linux® Server Deployment) exercises now ask students to deploy the latest version of Ubuntu® Server within another virtual machine on a Windows® PC (Intel® or ARM®) or macOS® PC (Intel® or Apple® Silicon). For simplicity, legacy concepts will now be covered by installing the appropriate packages on modern Ubuntu® Server, instead of installing a legacy Ubuntu® Server distribution. As with Fedora™ Workstation, a GitHub site will contain any necessary step changes to accommodate future versions of Ubuntu® Server.

The content of Chapter 7 (Working with the Shell) has been modified to include both the BASH and Z shells, and the Git topic has been expanded to include additional commands and GitHub functionality.

System coverage within Chapter 8 (System Initialization, X Windows, and Localization) has been expanded to include additional configuration commands and unit files.

A new section on sandboxed applications has been added in Chapter 11 (Compression, System Backup, and Software Installation) to discuss Flatpak, Snap and AppImage.

Modern network configuration using the iproute/iproute2 package and Systemd-resolved has been added to Chapter 12 (Network Configuration).

Reflecting the latest developments from the field, the cloud content in Chapter 13 (Configuring Network Services and Cloud Technologies) has been revamped and expanded to include the tools used to build and test containers and microservice architecture, plus the configuration of Kubernetes.

The security content within Chapter 14 (Security, Troubleshooting, and Performance) has been expanded to include encryption certificate configuration, Active Directory integration, nftables, Polkit and additional SELinux configuration.

Appendix C (Applying Your Linux® Knowledge to macOS®) has been revamped and updated to reflect the latest versions of macOS, and a new Appendix D (Applying Your Linux® Knowledge to FreeBSD®) has been added to introduce the configuration of FreeBSD® UNIX® servers.
