New to this Edition
Chapters have been reorganized to improve the overall flow of text content. For example, material on traditional, community, and data-driven policing (Chapter 5) now appears prior to chapters on patrol (Chapter 6) and specialized roles of police (Chapter 7). In addition, coverage of issues concerning police conduct now appears earlier (as Chapter 9), immediately after the chapter on policing within the law.
Each chapter now begins with a new opening vignette that highlights high profile cases or topics, giving students a familiar subject to help ease them into the chapter content. For example, Chapter 3's vignette discusses Making a Murderer, a Netflix documentary that elicited strong negative opinions about the criminal justice system and law enforcement. Chapter 4's vignette presents the case of Eric Garner, an African-American in New York City who was arrested for selling loose cigarettes and died after a police officer placed a chokehold on him.
Learning objectives, listed at the beginning of each chapter and repeated throughout the chapter to introduce relevant content, help guide students' reading and reinforce their understanding of main topics and concepts.
New cutting-edge topic coverage includes discussion of the use of technology to monitor law enforcement interactions with the public, society's changing view of law enforcement, use of force and excessive force, police and society relations, how domestic law enforcement has evolved into an international issue, 21st century policing, new surveillance techniques (drones, radar, phone tower use), and police discretion in decisive, high-stress moments.
