About The Product

Clear, engaging, and visual, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS equips non-biology majors with the science they'll need in life! Renowned for its writing style and trendsetting art, the new edition includes an enhanced visual pedagogy, learning features, and media options. Helping visual learners, "Figure It Out" questions in many illustrations ensure students understand the concepts. The new Data Analysis Activities at the end of every chapter help students strengthen their analytical skills. New "Take Home Messages" ensure students grasp key concepts while special features like the chapter opening case studies and "How Would You Vote?" questions enliven the subject matter and make relevant connections between biology and real-life concerns. Helpful media options include the interactive Aplia program that connects with today's students. Throughout this issues-oriented text, the authors emphasize that biology is an ongoing endeavor carried out by a diverse community of people and prepare students to make decisions that require an understanding of the process of science and basic biological principles.

  • The text balances concepts and applications. All points necessary for developing an understanding of a basic concept are on a single page or two facing pages so students can focus on one topic at a time and digest information in manageable segments.
  • The visually-appealing and accurate art program helps visual learners with step-by-step art, Figure It Out" images, and animated figures.
  • A chapter opening case study begins each chapter by exploring a current event or controversy directly related to the chapter's content. Students see the relevance of the material and revisit the case at the end of the chapter.
  • "How Would You Vote?" questions accompany the chapter opening case studies and ask students to consider biology-related news, explore the facts behind the issue, apply knowledge, and cast a vote.
  • PowerLecture for Starr's BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, 8e makes it easy for you to create customized lectures. Each chapter includes the following features, all organized by chapter section: lecture slides, new "What's Wrong with This Picture" slides, all chapter art and photos, bonus photos, animations, videos, PowerBibliography, Instructor's Manual, Test Bank, Examview testing software, JoinIn polling and quizzing slides, and everything else you need. This "buffet" of media resources is at your fingertips and is included on one DVD.

About the Contributor

  • Cecie Starr

For the past two decades, Cecie Starr has been known as one of the best-selling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect. Instead of building houses, she now builds, with care and attention to detail, incredible texts based on this philosophy: “I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice.”

  • Christine Evers

Christine Evers has been creating multimedia and Web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. She earned her B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook. After working as a research assistant studying the developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied evolutionary biology and honeybee behavior. She has a strong interest in science education and serves as a member of her local school board.

  • New on-page running glossary provides immediate help with the language of Biology and aids reading comprehension.
  • New media options include the interactive Aplia program as well as CengageNOW and WebTutor for Blackboard and WebCT featuring new pop-up tutors that help explain key topics with short video explanations.
