Overview

About The Product

COMPARATIVE POLITICS: STRUCTURES AND CHOICES, offers a thematic framework that seamlessly connects concepts, theories, and country-specific information. In the Second Edition, an important set of concepts and theories is introduced and then applied to each of nine countries (the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, China, India, Nigeria, and Iran) through the Topic in Countries (TIC) sections of each chapter. Students develop an understanding of how economic, cultural, identity, and political structures are linked to political systems and how individuals make political choices.

Features

  • The unique thematic approach of COMPARATIVE POLITICS: STRUCTURES AND CHOICES places chapter concepts in context to help students fully understand the material—and succeed in class.
  • Think and Discuss prompts ask students to apply critical-thinking skills to the concepts as they're introduced, while In Theory and Practice (ITAP) boxes delve deeper to inspire students to think critically about and discuss the central topics of each chapter. Each ITAP box provides a brief overview of a key comparative politics theory and then discusses its application to one of the TIC cases.
  • Engaging students from the very beginning, the text features objectives at the beginning of each chapter to reinforce text concepts and ensure student understanding with guided reading. In addition, Did You Know? boxes provide interesting notes and facts that apply to the concepts being covered.
  • Key terms are highlighted in the text and defined in a marginal glossary for easy access.

New to this Edition

  • Students are guided in their reading in several ways. Learning Objectives orient the reader to the most important concepts in each chapter. Refined Topic in Countries sections include a new introduction that highlights what to look for as concepts are applied to each country. New Topic In Country (TIC) Wrap Up sections recap the themes that run through the cases covered in that section. A new Country Summary at the end of each TIC section organizes the information just covered in a succinct table.
  • In addition to the nine countries covered in the TIC sections, France, Iraq, and South Africa appear prominently in the book in new "Spotlight on…" boxes.
  • The new design provides a readable presentation of the material and clearly distinguishes the conceptual sections of each chapter from the Topic in Country sections.
  • The Second Edition reflects the most current coverage of political events, which is critical in this area.
  • A new author blog provides timely connections of real-life events to topics covered in the textbook.
  • New Research in Context boxes summarize a recent, important, and relevant comparative politics research article. The summary includes research questions and hypotheses, major theories examined, and the resulting findings. The second part of the exercise focuses on the real-world importance and application of the research.
  • A helpful reference is now featured in the front of the book. New Countries-at-a-Glance include the following information for each of the nine Topic in Countries cases and three "Spotlight on…" countries: a map, basic economic statistics, key cultural themes, identity divisions, regime type, legislatures and executives, unelected components of government, interest groups and social movements, political parties and elections, and leadership.
